Gavin Beer started in the industry as an apprentice with Eastern Gas, qualified after 3 years and worked as a Gas Service Engineer for many years after. Back in those days British Gas didn't install central heating, they always used sub-contractors, but they were looking to start up 'in house' heating teams and Gavin was part of the first British Gas Central Heating team in the Watford area.

 

Gavin continued to work with British Gas, but decided to take voluntary redundancy in 1996. Gavin continued to work in the industry for other companies for six years, but it was eight years ago that A Rated began. The transition of working for a company to working ‘self employed’ was a relatively smooth, as relationships with customers had been built during working with British Gas.

 

‘A big client base has been built over the course of time I have known some of my customers for over 25 years. Customers do like to deal with the same people, which is why when I left British Gas they still wanted to use me. Eighty per cent of my work is recommendation, while advertising plays a very important part in name recognition’.

 

I acknowledge that the industry has become even more regulated now with CORGI being taken over by the Gas Safe Register, but this has all been part of moving with the times and ensures customer safety and confidence by making it more difficult for the 'cowboys' to operate.
